Defoe, hasn't had the ability to play at the to play at the top level for a while now and perhaps Rooney should take his place on the bench. With a lot of the old guard starting to lose their places in the team, a new generation are coming through and if Roy plans to spend a while at the helm of this team he needs to take the reigns sooner rather than later.Ĭarroll caused absolute havoc in the Swedish defence and Welbeck showed that he has a touch of class and ingenuity that we haven't seen in a while. If Roy did leave Rooney out of the team it would send a message to the whole of the England team and it could be the right message. Hodgson will practically be a walk-over like so many managers before him if he doesn't stand up to Rooney and the whole 'player power' epidemic. If Hodgson lets Rooney straight back into the team, then he shows that discipline doesn't matter to him, that talent is more important than behavior. In the short-run putting Rooney back in to the team presents an issue in the case that the team dynamic could be upset, however there is also a long-term problem. I genuinely think that putting Rooney straight back in to the team could be far more of a risk than leaving him on the bench. However if Rooney comes into the game, shouting at team mates or getting booked, putting more pressure on the midfielders - that will hamper Hodgson's vision of the game. Hodgson is an incredibly organised manager, he gets his team to prepare the right way for the game and this has shown already. Rooney's absence from the tournament so far and his stint in South Africa both showcase the same trait about him, ill-discipline. Rooney showed in South Africa that he could be more of a hindrance than a helping hand and the same could occur in Ukraine. It would be an incredibly large statement to make during his first real test as England manager. The question is whether Roy Hodgson is brave enough to leave Rooney on the bench. This is not what England need, and if Rooney does play I'm sure due to his lack of match practice he will do more harm than good. Currently the whole team dynamic that is running through the England camp is proving to be successful, however if Rooney joins in the team the moment his suspension ends then the ethic is broken and it becomes the Rooney show. England need to score against Ukraine to insure qualification, scoring more will insure that they come top and don't have to face stellar competition in the next round. Wayne Rooney has a fantastic work ethic, there's no doubting that, but he doesn't stay in position either.

They rarely drop deep, they run, they probe and most importantly they calmly work their socks off for the team.

Welbeck and Carroll are out and out strikers. One thing about the current England team is that it works. However the only weakness for England is apparently upfront with a mixture of inexperience and inconsistency among the traits of the players available. The midfield is distinguished in the middle and the wings are occupied by exciting players (Walcott and Chamberlain) or players with high work ethics (Downing and Milner). Despite Lawro claiming that Glen Johnson was our best defender (even though he was primarily at fault for both goals) there is solidarity at the back for England, no doubt due to the huge experience provided by Cole, Lescott and Terry. So far despite all of the worry about Hodgson's selections (a lot which came from myself) England actually look like a very good side, not tournament winning, but certainly not pushovers. Not losing to a very strong French team on a 23 game unbeaten run, but also showing resilience and mental strength to fight back against an organised Swedish side.

But the question is, should Roy Hodgson play him?Įngland for once have actually had a semi-impressive start to an international tournament. The enigma that is Wayne Rooney is 'finally' free to play a part for England in the Euro's.
